Visit Chester's Camera Obscura

Drop in and visit one of only 21 camera obscura’s in the UK, which sits on top of Bonewaldesthorne’s Tower on the North-West corner of Chester City Walls.

Installed as a tourist attraction around 1840 on top of a medieval tower, Chester’s camera obscura is visited via a spiral staircase.

Climb the spiral staircase, enter the darkened chamber and see an image of an area beyond the tower on a horizontal plate. There will be a Heritage Chester volunteer there to explain more.

Groups of eight visit the camera obscura approximately every ten minutes. Please expect to queue at busy times.

Please Note also that the Water Tower will not be open during this event but will be open on Sunday 20 September from 11am-1pm.

Unfortunately this tower is only accessible via a small flight of steps.

• Is this event suitable for children?

  
  

 Yes. This event is suitable for children. Younger/smaller children may struggle to hold attention during the short presentations and to see the image plate.

• Is this event suitable for dogs?

Dogs are more the welcome on Chester Walls, however we are unable to welcome them into the tower itself. It's not safe for our furry friends.
