About the Event
Did you know that the University of Chester originated as Chester Diocesan Teacher Training College in 1839, founded by a distinguished group of local leading figures in the Church of England?
The vision of the founders including John Bird Sumner, Bishop of Chester (later Archbishop of Canterbury) and Henry Raikes, Chancellor of the Diocese of Chester; in 1839 was to resource Church of England schools by their creation of Chester Diocesan Teacher Training College; their motivation was the church’s commitment to the wellbeing of all, their inspiration the church’s traditions of scholarship and learning devoted to the search for truth and the service of society.
The University’s life today would be unrecognizable to our founders but we seek to maintain their aim not only to educate students in academic and practical subjects, but to foster the all-round development of individuals and to place education and research at the service of society.
In the beautiful Chapel throughout the Heritage Open Days there will be a display celebrating our connections with our long history – see on display an intricate embroidered anniversary quilt crafted by members of staff for our 175th anniversary and our restored College Bible, discover more about our founders, staff, students and alumni across the decades.
Come and drop in to experience the peace of this beautiful building.
The Chapel will also be open tomorrow - Friday 19 September from 10am 4pm.
