St. Mary's Church in Weaverham

St. Mary's Church in Weaverham will be open for guided tours on Saturday 19 September from 10am-1pm. From 2pm there will be short guided walks of the village centre based on the blue plaque walk leaflet.

Join us at St. Mary's Church in the morning which is Grade I listed. The building and tower (containing 6 bells) are 15th century and is built of local Ashlar sandstone. The church has been a place of worship since Saxon times and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. A ceiling is from Vale Royal Abbey and there are many other interesting internal and external features. Restoration in 1853-55 by Anthony Salvin and in 1877 by John Douglas. A Window dedicated to Charles Spencer Stanhope of the Spencer Stanhope family of Cawthorne, South Yorkshire. C E Kempe window dedicated to the renowned local Dr Smith.

Guided tours available on arrival. No waiting! Alternatively, you can walk round independently using an information sheet.

St Mary’s bellringers will be offering Tower Tours in the morning.

In the afternoon at 2pm there will be a guided short walk of the village centre, based on the blue plaque walk leaflet. The walk starts in the church car park. If you wish to do the walk yourself there will be copies of the trail at the church. The walk shows a lively village with 16th century buildings interspersed with Victorian and modern to form a pleasant and interesting stroll.

The church does have a car park but there is further free parking at the village car park on Church Street if required.

• Is the venue accessible?

One small step into church but ramp available for wheelchair users.

• Is this event dog friendly?

Dogs are not allowed in the church, but are welcome for the walk in the afternoon as long as they are on a lead.
