About the Event

2026 marks 40 years since the end of commercial salt production at the Lion Salt Works. We are commemorating the anniversary with a free eighties themed celebration for HODs on Sunday 20 September from 11am-4pm. Come along and join in the fun!

The Lion Salt Works is a restored historic open-pan salt making site, in the village of Marston, close to Northwich. This £10.23 million project opened in June 2015 offering a fascinating journey through the life of the country’s last open-pan salt making site. Join us for FREE ENTRY to the Lion Salt Works to explore the lives of the people who worked here.

Highlights of the day include:

*Grand opening of the Lion Salt Works Trust’s new salt making demonstration area, followed by salt making demonstrations.

*Free entry to the museum with regular mini guided tours.

*Archive film of the Salt Works when it was still in production in the early 1980s.

*See the Nodding Donkey brine pump running at regular intervals through the day.

*Fun competitions for the best eighties outfit and the best retro car.

Admission to the Museum and all activities are free of charge in celebration of Heritage Open Days. The museum will be open over HODs but on all other days normal admission charges will apply.
