Dunelm Duo Concert at St. John's Church

Come and relax to the delightful sound of the Dunelm Duo. This special lunchtime recital takes place among our magnificent 11th Century Norman columns and later Medieval architecture.

The Dunelm Duo - Lynne (flute and sax) and Robert (piano) will perform a varied programme that draws on classical favourites, light music and more contemporary works, offering an enjoyable and accessible musical experience for all.

The church of St John the Baptist has a history that spans the centuries with origins from before the Norman conquest as an important Saxon Minster. It was founded when Chester was part of the ancient kingdom of Mercia. Adjacent to Chester’s Roman amphitheatre, it is on a site that is believed to be associated with worship from very dawn of Christianity in the British Isles.

Its rich history includes occupation by parliamentarian troops during the English Civil War as part of the siege of royalist Chester. Among its many interesting features is the organ that was used for the Coronation of Queen Victoria in 1838. This is housed in an impressive wooden case dating from 1895 which was designed by the eminent local architect T M Lockwood (the architect responsible for Chester’s iconic half-timber revival 1888 Cross Buildings).

The concert is a drop-in event. The nave can accommodate over 100 people. Could the audience please be in their seats by 12.50pm for a prompt start.

Please note that refreshments will be available to purchase – there will be a small charge (proceeds go to St John’s).

The Church is open from 11am if you wish to visit prior to the concert. There will be a drop-in opportunity to visit the Chapter House (Weather permitting!) from 2pm- 4pm. Guided tours will be taking place in the afternoon. There will be a talk entitled A Trek through Triassic Chester at 7.30pm-8.45pm by Paul Hyde. Tours and talk are bookable via eventbrite.

• Is the venue or planned route fully accessible (without steps, rough ground, steep gradients)? 

  
  

Partially accessible The church is accessible to wheelchair users including a ramp into the building. There is limited space for wheelchairs alongside either side of the pews and towards the rear of the church. Given the acoustics the concert should be enjoyable throughout the nave, but views can be restrictive from the limited available areas of open floorspace.

This event is not aimed at children although some children will love to explore the historical space. all children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult.
